Quidditch

Quidditch (Czech: Famfrpál, Slovak: Metlobal) is the most famous magical sport in the Harry Potter world. The concept of Quidditch is simple: seven players fly on broomsticks and try to outscore the opposing team. Unlike Muggle sports, Quidditch involves three balls: the Golden Snitch, the Quaffle, and two Bludgers. We will delve into the rules of Quidditch in more detail below. Quidditch was also a favorite sport of Harry Potter, who played for Gryffindor House at Hogwarts. The Quidditch collection offers various gift items featuring this unique sport, such as mugs with Golden Snitch designs or pens shaped like Nimbus 2000 brooms. If you want to learn more about Quidditch, including its rules, history, or Quidditch as a real Muggle sport, read on with us.

Quidditch from Harry Potter

Quidditch is a magical sport played on flying broomsticks. It is the most well-known and far-and-away the favorite sport among wizards. The popularity of Quidditch among wizards is akin to the popularity of soccer among Muggles. The game is played by two teams of seven players each, and the team with the most points after catching the Golden Snitch wins.

Quidditch Rules

The rules of Quidditch were officially recorded in 1750 by the British Ministry of Magic. The game is played with two teams of seven players each. Each position in Quidditch has a name: Keeper, Seeker, Beaters (2 players), and Chasers (3 players). The game involves a set of three balls: the Quaffle, the Golden Snitch, and two Bludgers. The Quidditch pitch is oval-shaped. At each end of the pitch are three tall hoops through which the Chasers attempt to throw the Quaffle. The Keeper's role is to guard the hoops and prevent goals. The Chasers aim to score goals by throwing the Quaffle through one of the hoops. The Bludgers are two "cursed" balls that fly around the pitch, trying to knock players off their brooms. The Beaters' job is to hit the Bludgers away from their team and towards the opposing team. Finally, the Seeker's task is to catch the smallest ball, the Golden Snitch. Catching the Golden Snitch earns the Seeker's team 150 points and ends the game. Scoring with the Quaffle is worth 10 points. It is possible for the team that catches the Snitch to lose if the other team has more than a 150-point lead (as happened in the Quidditch World Cup between Romania and Bulgaria, where Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and the Weasleys were present). The game also has specific rules, such as players being forbidden from grabbing opponents' brooms or other body parts, only the Keeper can catch the Quaffle, Beaters cannot target Bludgers at the Keeper, players may carry wands on the pitch but cannot use them against other players or their brooms, or on/against the balls, and other minor rules.

Quidditch Balls and Equipment

The balls used in Quidditch are the Quaffle, the Bludgers, and the Golden Snitch. Additional equipment used by Quidditch players includes brooms, Beater bats, Keeper helmets, and Quidditch goggles for playing in bad weather. Optional gear includes protective knee pads, elbow guards, and gloves. All necessary equipment can be purchased at the "Quality Quidditch Supplies" shop on Diagon Alley.

Quidditch in the Muggle World

Quidditch from Harry Potter is so popular that it has become a sport for us Muggles as well. There is even a Czech Quidditch Association that oversees the sport. The rules of Muggle Quidditch differ slightly from those in the magical version. It is played with 6-7 positions, which are the same as in the magical sport. Players are distinguished by headbands - white for Chasers, black for Beaters, green for Keepers, and yellow for Seekers. The principle is the same: Chasers attempt to throw the Quaffle (usually an under-inflated volleyball) through the opposing team's hoops guarded by the Keeper. The most frequent question is likely about the Golden Snitch. In this case, the Snitch is a small ball in a yellow sock attached with Velcro to the back of a neutral player’s clothing. The Snitch does not enter the game until the 19th minute, and catching it earns the team "only" 30 points. Beaters aim to knock out the opposing team’s players. Brooms in this version are simply plastic tubes that must be held between the legs during play. A knocked-out player must dismount from the broom, run to the hoop, and touch it to re-enter the game. Seeing this sport in person is truly an experience that no Harry Potter and wizarding world fan should miss.
