The Marauder's Map was never made in a wizarding workshop. Four Gryffindor students - Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs - drew it themselves and poured into it everything they had learned about Hogwarts over years of night-time wandering. The map shows every corridor, every secret staircase, and the name and position of everyone moving around the castle. Filch confiscated it and locked it in a drawer marked Confiscated and Highly Dangerous, from where Fred and George Weasley later retrieved it. They handed it to Harry in his third year as a gift that could take him all the way to Hogsmeade.

That map gave the calendar its shape. The front is printed as aged parchment, with the outline of the castle and the red ink that traces the routes and labels across the map. Anyone who knows the books and films will recognise it instantly - and anyone who does not simply gets a handsomely made calendar that looks like an old chart. Happily there is no need to recite the password to open it; just lift the door with today's number on it.

The sweets are the classic Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans as made by Jelly Belly: small, glossy and firm, with a thin shell and a soft centre. The contents of each door are randomly assorted, so there is no telling in advance which flavour anyone will get, and a pack may not contain all ten flavours listed. The calendar holds no toys or other non-food items - there are only beans behind the doors.

An advent calendar is usually opened once a day and that is that.
